Two letters from James Latham, 1 from New Orleans to his wife in Kentucky and 1 to Gen. Clark on Indian business. Five letters from daughter, Lucy Blackwell in Kentucky to mother, family news and descriptions of latest fashions and how to sew them. Letters from various other family members, usually discuss family news. Letterbook of James kept while sub-agent of Indian affairs, discuss "symptoms of lawlessness" in the Indians such as, theft of property, the sale of liquor to the Indians and murder of a man near Spoon River by a group of Potawatami. This book contains the inventory of James Latham's estate. Map of prime Logan County properties for sale in 1848. Deed of property sold to James Orendorff by Robert D. Latham and John D. Gillett. Photocopy of last will and testament of Peter Lanterman. 1861 diary of Henry C. Latham gives description of President Lincoln leaving for Washington and laments the death of Stephen Douglas. A few bills and receipts.

James and Mary Latham, both born in Virginia, moved to Kentucky and in 1819 came to Illinois with their nine children, settling at Elkhart Grove. James and his son Richard built a mill at Elkhart. When Sangamon County was organized, James was appointed judge of the probate court and justice of the peace. In 1821 he was appointed sub-agent for Indian Affairs at Peoria, Ill. He and Mary moved to Peoria, but when James died in 1826, Mary returned to Elkhart. Their son Robert was the sheriff of Loga...
